Axel Hütte's 'Spiegelungen' play with the myth of Narcissus, who falls in love with his reflection and pays for this love with death. Since the invention of this myth in general and the mirror in particular, water surfaces, especially when surrounded by trees, have exerted an irresistible attraction. In a sense, Hütte's new pictures are further developments of his jungle photographs. Looking through his lens one day, he discovered the upright reflection of a human figure on the dark green surface of a body of water. The plate camera with which Hütte works reproduces the world upside down - and now showed him the mirror image in reverse, i.e. 'the right way round'. He was so fascinated by this discovery that he successfully dedicated his most recent series to mirrors. Starting from a simple optical-physical law, he arrived at images that irritate our perception and seemingly playfully puzzle our senses.
