Pangnirtung by Robert Frank | Photo Book
Robert Frank traveled to the Arctic Circle in August 1992. He followed a friend's invitation to Pangnirtung, a village where around 1300 Inuit live. But as is so often the case, Frank's photographs do not show the obvious: There is not a single person to be seen in the pictures from this trip. In a harsh yet lyrical tone that refuses to be kitschy, Robert Frank shows the deserted harbor, a haberdashery, a telephone booth and the cemetery. He describes what he saw in the book itself: “Prefabricated houses on the main street of Pangnirtung. Every now and then a decorated window - reflections inside and out. Stones - perhaps the counterweight to the sky above.”
