Since 2002, Sze Tsung Leong has documented the dramatic transformations of Chinese cities, capturing the shift from the destruction of traditional neighborhoods to the mass construction of new urban environments. Using a large-format view camera, he travels to cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing, producing highly detailed images that illustrate the scale of upheaval and the contradictions of this changing landscape. His photographs juxtapose traditional buildings being demolished with the glass structures set to replace them, showcasing seemingly abandoned sites and historic areas that survive through neglect rather than intention. Amidst these culturally ambivalent spaces, small Chinese script on indistinct signs hints at their location. Collectively, the images in *History Images* depict the erasure of history and the anticipation of a new future, capturing the urban reality in the delicate transition between two eras.
