Eye on Time by Michael Ruetz | Photo Book
Can transience and time be made visible in pictures? Michael Ruetz can: he has been observing hundreds of landscapes and cityscapes in Germany and Europe since the 1960s. In Berlin, he follows the effects of time with the change of the political system and the upheaval of society. Buildings disappear and emerge, entire squares are plowed up, the city skyline is subject to the same changes as the country. Marx-Engels-Platz becomes Schloßplatz, Potsdamer Platz is transformed from a desolate no-man's land into an area of high-rise buildings. Land and city become “Zeitschaft”. Ruetz' picture sequences are short films about long periods of time. This book documents history in fast motion in a unique way. It bears witness to how architecture shapes and reshapes living spaces and thus gains the power of interpretation over our perception.
