Miroslav Tichý | Photo Book
The story of octogenarian Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý is both astonishing and compelling. Using crude homemade cameras made from cardboard and duct tape, Tichý captured thousands of images of women in his Moravian hometown of Kyjov during the 1960s and '70s. His blurred, off-kilter photographs transform everyday moments into small epiphanies, resembling the early works of Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke. Printed imperfectly, they evoke a retrograde feeling that subtly critiques the progressive realism of official Soviet culture amidst the Cold War. The catalogue Miroslav Tichý accompanies an exhibition at the International Center of Photography, featuring over 250 plates and critical essays by Brian Wallis and others.
